Responsive, attuned, holistic & customized integrative
infant sleep education & 1:1 support.
Rooted in neuroscience & grown in matrescence.
No cry-it-out, Ever.
A motherhood renaissance.
Where you’ll be encouraged to connect with your baby and listen to your intuition - not outsource it.
Where root causes will be discovered and moved though with support and care - not masked or missed.
Where sleep improvements come as the natural byproduct of diving deeply within yourself and looking deeply at you baby, your relationship, your life and how you want to mother.
Let’s change the paths we’re walking - for ourselves and our babies - and root deeply into our matrescence.
This is Rooted Infant Sleep.
Why Rooted Infant Sleep?
Like a seedling growing roots, your baby's brain is forming millions of new connections every second. How you respond to them in sleep shapes that growth - their attachment, their default nervous system state, their mental health - for years to come. Every time you respond, you're helping them grow strong roots to weather whatever life brings.
My Work
I help mothers & caregivers trust themselves, advocate for their children and tune out the pressure to sever the mother-infant dyadic bond in service to “independence”. If you're looking for a voice - a village - that lets you stay rooted in your values and get rest, you’ve found it.
I'll help you understand what's truly normal for infant sleep, lean into your intuition, and break cycles that don't serve you, all through a holistic and multifaceted lens that honors the real emotional and biological needs of you and your baby.
Your child isn’t broken for waking at night and you're not broken for wanting to respond. I’ll help you find your path amidst the noise so you and your child can thrive.
My Commitment to You
My support centers around your and your child's nervous systems, relationship, physiology, developmental needs and values - not one-size-fits-all systems, methods or schedules. Cry-it-out - even “gentle” methods - will never be mentioned as an acceptable, attuned approach.
We’ll look at what’s driving sleep struggles rather than just managing the symptoms or eliminating the signals. Sleep improvements come as a byproduct of addressing the full picture - nervous system support, developmental needs and capabilities, biological and relational truths, feeding considerations, sensory and environmental considerations, etc ...
“Sleep” may be where our conversations start, but those struggles rarely exist in isolation. Our partnership can start to uncover any root causes, drivers, and contributing factors to best support your and your child’s rest and development while honoring physiological and relational truths alongside your intuition.
I’ll meet you where you are - listening, processing, educating, reassuring, and building a path forward that supports rest and connection, while ruling out (or referring out for) any biological or other issues that might be blocking the way.
Your child’s sleep will be unique to them, just like your journey in motherhood. Together we’ll find the best path that honors your child and your intuition.

“When we provide a nurtured presence and empathy to sleep states, we are lending our baby our brain at their most vulnerable time, when they relax into unconscious brain states.”
— Greer Kirshenbaum, The Nurture Revolution
Hi, I’m Diane.
Certified Integrative Infant Sleep Practitioner.
Infant & child attachment advocate.
Home-birth, bed-sharing, toddler mom and pre-natal yoga teacher.
My Story of Becoming Rooted in Matrescence
Even before I had my son, something in me knew sleep training wasn't right for us. The thought of leaving my baby to cry - when every cell of them was wired to need me close, to need my body to help regulate theirs - broke my heart before I even held him. I didn't have the experience or the research yet, but I knew.
Born with tension from a hard (but planned and great) home birth and from oral ties no one caught right away, he was never the "good sleeper" everyone kept asking about. Many long, tired nights of research led me to notice things: his mouth always open while he slept, his head tipped back, the little clicking sounds and milk leaking out while he nursed. Small signs, it turned out, of airway, tension and other issues that were likely behind all the waking. If I'd had him in another room, or trained him to stop calling for me in the night, I may not have caught these nuanced but connected signals. Instead, I followed my instincts and intuition and found a supportive team. A chiropractor, an airway-focused pediatric dentist, a feeding therapist, and a naturopath who helped us and him get support to thrive, which in turn gave me support to get more rest. He's three and a half now and finally sleeping well.
My Path to This Work
Since my son’s birth, I've sat with so many moms - friends, coworkers, students in my prenatal yoga classes - and heard the same desire underneath all our different stories: we want someone to tell us our instincts aren’t broken. That normal infant sleep doesn't look like sleeping 7-7 or what so many influencers say. That lots of babies aren’t “good sleepers” (and that’s what’s actually normal). That we don't have to choose between their regulation or our rest. That other mothers are also responding every time their babies wake - tuning in and observing deeply instead of scheduling and pulling back.
The abstract but incredibly strong pull I felt since the first days of becoming a mother - to somehow help more families through this and help others avoid the late nights of searching for answers, of feeling alone in nurturing and responding to their infants in the night - finally crystalized when I started Rooted Infant Sleep.
I grew up bed-sharing, held close and raised with the belief that connection comes first. Now I'm raising my own son the exact same way with current science, education, personal experience and proof to back it up. You can support and nurture your child’s unique nervous system and sleep journey while still being rested. You can choose your own path, honor your intuition and protect your and your child’s attachment and mental health.
The Rooted Infant Sleep Philosophy
-
Connection is Crucial
Infants are physiologically wired to co-regulate - their brain’s are literally not capable of self-soothing - they need to borrow a caregiver’s calm nervous system. Holding & responding is not coddling - it’s building a strong brain & nervous system for life-long health.
-
Cry-it-Out is Not Actually Conducive to Restful Sleep
Cry-It-Out sleep training modifies a behavior (an infant waking / signaling for a caregiver). It does not address the root cause of the waking or teach self-soothing - it encourages a shutdown / survival dorsal vagal state.
-

Your Child is Unique
Their brain, nervous system and sleep are unique to them. One-size-fits-all plans or schedules will not support your child to their full potential and they may miss important sleep red flags and underlying factors.
Sleep Education & Support Offerings
Why you’re probably here - to find your village - and rest.
To find rest that honors your intuition. To deepen what you already know to be true - that you don’t need to “teach” your baby anything. To see that you’re not the only one responding at night - over and over - knowing even when it’s hard, you wouldn’t do it any other way.
No one-size fits all plans or schedules. No guarantee that your baby will sleep through the night in X number of nights. No ignoring their needs between certain hours of the day and spiking your stress. No apps. No algorithms.
Just responsive, attuned, holistic and truly customized integrative infant sleep education and support to empower and enable you to become the expert on your baby with knowledge that is rooted in neuroscience and grown in matrescence.
I’ll help you trust yourself, advocate for your child and tune out the pressure to make choices that might not align with your values or miss important sleep red flags. We’ll walk through the portal of matrescence together, looking deeply at your baby and uncovering truths about yourself that could be affecting sleep.
Support & education offerings for mothers & caregivers ready to root into their matrescence. Nationwide support. Based in Kansas City.

Things You Might Be Wondering
Frequently asked questions and answers to help you move forward in connection and rest.
-
Absolutely not - and that's the whole point. Sleep training - even “gentle” methods - typically ask you to put distance between you and your baby, often through extinction or timed-check methods in service of “independent sleep” or eliminating night waking or crying/signaling for a caregiver. These behavior modifications go against normal infant physiology (research shows an infant’s primary means of communication is through crying). I believe in working with and supporting normal infant and mother dyadic physiology and work instead to discover and support root causes of WHY an infant is waking or signaling for a caregiver. Instead of encouraging separation from your infant - prematurely severing the mother-infant bond - I’ll encourage you to lean into your instincts and observe deeply so you become the expert on their sleep. I’ll help you understand what's physiologically normal for your baby's age, unique body and nervous system, look deeply and holistically at what might be getting in the way of better sleep, and support you in responding in line with your values — not stepping back from them. You will never be encouraged to let your baby cry it out.
-
“Sleep training” often centers around schedules, “independent” sleep, and reducing night wakings as the primary goal - altering physiologically normal infant behavior. My support centers around your baby's nervous system, physiology, developmental needs, and your family's values - supporting normal infant sleep. Sleep improvements come as a byproduct of addressing the full picture, not just their sleep. We’ll look at the "why" behind sleep struggles rather than just managing symptoms or eliminating signals. I want you and your child to truly thrive, not just survive.
-
Yes. This is probably the question closest to my heart because I’ve been there and it’s what inspired me to become a certified Integrative Infant Sleep Practitioner and start Rooted Infant Sleep. You don't have to choose between responding to your baby and getting rest. We'll look at the whole picture: feeding; environment; daytime rhythms; your baby's unique temperament, needs, and biology; nutritional needs and possible gaps; and your own bandwidth and nervous system status to find sustainable shifts that bring you real relief without asking you to override your instincts.
-
I work with infants from birth - 3 years (“infant-hood” is neurologically defined as 0-3). If your baby is younger than 4 months, their sleep patterns are still establishing and I'm happy to offer guidance on what's normal or could point to an underlying issue or red flag, but know that their sleep will rapidly change in the entire first year of life.
-
Possibly. Frequent* night waking, open-mouth breathing, noisy or “click-y” nursing, and restless sleep can sometimes point to underlying issues like tethered oral tissues (tongue or lip ties), airway restriction, body tension from birth, nutritional deficiencies, and other possible root or underlying causes. I'm trained to recognize these signals and patterns and, when appropriate, will refer you to trusted specialists like: pediatric airway dentists, IBCLCs, bodyworkers, feeding therapists, etc … so you can get the full support you and your baby deserve and the rest you need.
*Frequent night waking is also biologically and developmentally “normal” for many infants (0-3) as their sleep gradually consolidates to more closely resemble adult sleep. To determine if night wakings are biologically normal or driven by one or more underlying root causes, we’ll talk about the details of the waking and things that could be affecting them like: how the child is being fed (breastfeeding, formula, combo), where the child sleeps (bed-sharing, room-sharing, separate room), daytime routines, etc …
-
Yes and yes! Bed-sharing is a personal and cultural norm for so many families (statistically, many of your friends and family members are likely bed-sharing at least on occasion — even if they don’t talk about it). We'll go through the Safe Sleep Seven and talk through your specific setup — your mattress, bedding, who's in the bed, feeding status, any health issues for baby and anyone else in the bed, and more — so you can make informed and safe choices that fit your family's needs and values and enable you all to get more rest. Planned, safely prepared bed-sharing is always safer than accidentally falling asleep in a dangerous sleep space or situation (on a soft mattress, in a glider or chair, on a sofa, and other spots that even the most well-meaning parents can accidentally doze off in). Even if you don’t plan to bed-share, knowing how to safely prepare a shared sleep surface can put your mind at ease for “just-in-case” situations where it may be necessary or desired.
-
My support is always rooted in what infants bodies and brains are capable of and based on neuroscience and attuned, responsive support from caregivers. This philosophy can be used by both bed-sharing parents and parents whose infants sleep in a separate space (sidecar sleeper, bassinet, crib, floor bed, etc …) or a separate room. In accordance with current health recommendations, I do recommend that infants sleep in the same room as parents for at least the first 6 months (ideally the first 8), after which the risk of SIDS dramatically drops.
-
Yes - Infants that have been in the NICU or born prematurely are often some of the babies that most need and benefit from holistic, responsive and attuned integrative infant sleep support. Especially for babies born prematurely, their brains and nervous systems can be even more immature than full-term babies (who are already born with immature nervous systems and only 25% of their brains developed) and can benefit greatly from the most supportive care and sleep possible. Infant brains form millions of neurons per second and those neurons and how they’re wired (for stress or for calm) is directly shaped by their default nervous system state - which is hugely impacted and shaped during sleep and how they are responded to.
-
Yes, enthusiastically! Breastfeeding (especially overnight or while bed-sharing) is biologically normal and helps you and your baby achieve more restful sleep. Studies have also shown that any amount of breastfeeding more than halves the risk of SIDS, and exclusively breastfeeding further decreases that risk. I will never push families toward breastfeeding as this is an individualized decision based on you and your baby, but have knowledge and referral support if needed that can make your sleep and breastfeeding journey easier if you choose to do so. With that said, I also understand that some families may choose not to or be unable to breastfeed due to personal decisions or health situations. However you feed your child, you will be supported with the same integrative, caring, 1:1 sleep education, support and advice.
-
Each call or package differs in what it includes. Some offer a straight forward informational style call meant to educate and introduce you to the concept of integrative infant sleep, while others offer an in-depth intake and assessment, a personalized plan built around your baby and family, and defined support windows with scheduled check-in calls. You'll have direct access to me throughout specified package support windows to ask questions, troubleshoot, and adjust plans as things shift — because they will. Please see individual call and package descriptions for more info.
-
Every child and every family is different. Some families could see changes within the first week or two; others - especially when there are one or more underlying factors at play - may take a bit longer as we work through your unique situation, possible root causes and referrals. What I can promise is steady, attentive support the whole way through, never a one-size-fits-all script or plan.
-
Feel free to send me an email or dm so we can talk through what's going on and figure out what kind of support could help. If that’s not me, I’m happy to send you referrals to other trusted professionals.
